This is a little forest flower I saw and photographed in Louisiana. Identifying it after I found that it can be hard to find due to its short growth and flowering cycle (only a little over a month)!
Both Native Americans and early European settlers harvested the peppery roots for medicinal purposes, a snack, or seasoning.
Also known as crow's toes, pepper root, and purple-flowered toothwort.
